Lunch with a view

So in between training today I decided to go have lunch up on vista hill in Foothills Park up along Page Mill Road. I was treated to a vast view of the peninsula and enjoyed my lunch. It reminded me of the days when Cori and I would go have lunch on a daily basis and I would try an find the perfect lunch spots for us to enjoy our meals.

Cold Outside

Listening to the news disenfranchises me especially the venomous rhetoric by politcians and the incompetence of the Bay Bridge replacement process.

It is really cold outside. I half think I am doing Nico a favor pulling him out of soccer until his grades improve.

The man in black is back!

Finished 2nd at Jungle Run last month. Last week had a peronal best at
both the Santa Cruz Sprint Tri and the spalsh and Dash. 64 out of 499
at SCST and beat my previous time by 20 minutes at S & D. Swimming
about every week at the Wharf in Santa Cruz and taking weekly hikes.
Next week I plan to hike the ridge to the sea for a second time. Yes
the man in the arena is back but mindful that I an prone to injury so
the key is to train smart.

A Moment to Reflect

Always on the go or so it seems but such is the case when you have
lofty goals and a body with which to accomplish them. I would say that
all is well. Miles to go before I sleep I guess I guess is what I say
and promises to keep. I did the Skyline to the Sea hike not to long
ago with Nico and Hallvard. 32.5 miles. It was great. Last week I came
in second in my age group at the Jungle Run in Los Gatos. I am going
to Guerneville this weekend to support Hallvard in his first Ironman.
I think next year I will go to Norway and to the Ironman there called
the Norseman. Next month I am going to a sprint triathlon, a 10k and a
second ridge to the sea hike. Well may fortune favor the foolish and
the wind be at my back.

Half the year done! Lookin forward to the second half!

So half the year has gone by. ALOT has happened. I am restarting my running training. Seeing as how I crashed again 3 weeks ago. Calves locked up, excrutiating pain in my quad in addition to my left ham string. Well I am better know for the most part but I need to take it easy. This week I am planning to resume training and hike the Skyline to the Sea trail. I also have the Splash and Dash on Thursday! The Splash and Dash is put on by Skinfit who's one of our team's sponsors. I am looking forward to both.

Long weekend of training. We did the preview of the Alcatraz run and bike course. Today Carlos and I ran the Sawyer Camp Trail or most of it. Friday night I stayed home but I had a lot of fun Sat and Sun Nite.

Fit2Run is now The Man in the Arena

Well it is now June 1st and a lot has gone down since I last wrote. The Boston Marathon had crippled my training to non-existent. However thanks to Greg at SMI, my mom, and some much needed rest I am near 100%.

Greg at SMI and his anecdotal knowledge of the human body and specifically the injuries runners incur while training and racing helped identify my injuries and fix them.

My mom for financially supporting my rehabilitation.

And some much needed rest. It was hard to lay off training and I still have not been back to the Skyline Ridges since before Boston as I am practicing baby steps in my recovery and waiting till I am ready.

SO I went to Big Sur but did not compete in the relay because it was too soon after Boston. I had Drew C. run in my place. I was very pleased though with thier effort. They finished in 3hours 55 minutes. It made me very proud to see Nico sprint across the finish line. Of course Christina did not turn on my Garmin watch so the data was lost but overall I was happy. JD organised the race for us so it only seemed fair to let him keep the botton. I was very proud of him as well having come such a long way in a short time.

I came to Wildflower in a really foul mood after having lost my keys at the gym on Friday night and having to wait till 10pm for someone to come pick me up so I could go home and pack. Alana was having none of that though and instantly tamed the beast in me with her "southern charm".

I pulled my left hamstring trying to compensate for my right IT band. Nevertheless I had a good race. I finished about 5 minutes slower than my first Olympic Tri in Santa Barbara which I thought was good all things considered.

I competed in the Great Urban Race with about 7 other members of my Tri Team. It was a great race working together solving clues, racing across the city by bus and on foot. We were all dressed in costume as well. I had a blast. We even qualified for the national championship in New Orleans.

The next day I met with some of my Fit2Run class and my family to run the Bay to Breakers. We had a great time there as well but to be honest it was all kind of played out to me. It is always the same course and the same people. I might skip next year unless I am doing something special like a centipede.

Last week I was finally able to resume regular training and not just racing at low intensity and I wasted no time.

On Memorial day Hallvard and his family and I hiked up to Mt. Tam from Stinson Beach. Then finished off the day with a great dinner and conversation over some vino.

Last Wednesday Hallvard and I rode our bikes to Los Gatos for coffee. It was a ride I had been wanting to do for some time so I was very happy we got it out of the way. He is leaving in two months and there is a lot I want to get done.

Today I am recovering from a hard weekend of training that included a 40 mile ride to Double Dogg Ranch and a 4.5 mile run at the ranch once we got there to celebrate my friend Todd's birthday. On Sunday he and I went to Santa Cruz and swam around the wharf (a 1 mile swim). Afterwards we met Drew C. and we ran the Santa Cruz 10k course.

As you can tell by my blog title I am changing the name of my blog from Fit2Run to The Man in the Arena. Afterall I am not just a runner I am a triathlete now and a proud one at that. This summer will be filled with may challenges, adventures and races. Afterall I am "the man in the arena."

The Man in the Arena

A friend reminded me of a quote that had influenced me a long time ago by Theodore Roosevelt. I want to share that with you so that it too can maybe one day inspire you:

Boston Race Report


Official Time 3:26:59 Overall 6340 (out of 26000+) Gender 5433 Division 2913

I was in pain from the beginning but nothing prepared could have prepared me for the obstacles I had to overcome in this race. The weather was significantly warmer in the beginning of the race than I had anticipated and my favorite pair of running socks (my adidas copas) which are usually so great because they compress and cushion had to be ditched at mile 11. My calves and my feet were really overheating and on fire and so for the rest of the race I ran without socks. What really got me though was my left IT band and quad failing about the 10k mark. That was in addition to my right knee which was bothering me from the start. So from mile 6 on I was in for 20 more miles of excruciating pain. Luckily for me at about the half marathon mark I discovered that if I poured the ice cold water from the aid stations over my It band and knee it seemed to numb them just enough to get by till the next aid station which were about every mile or so. This obviously added extra time but I was determined to finish without stopping and at least in under an three and a half hours. My original goal was under 3 but I knew that was a tall order since I was not at 100%. But I was determined to leave with my dignity and I did not want to let anyone down because so many of you wished me well and good luck that when I was down and thought I could not take it anymore it was your well wishes that kept me going. Of course most importantly I did not want to let down myself. Well fortunately for me I qualified for next years race so there is always next year. The course was fantastic though and was kind to me - it seemed that everybody turned up for the race and that definitely helped push me along. The course itself was what I would consider very easy and nothing that on a day when all things were equal I could tear up the course with a sub 3 time. I need to thank my Triathlon Coach, Reto, and his girlfriend Asheley for taking very good care of me while I was here. Reto dispensed great advice and was very supportive and Asheley was terrific race support and I could not have done it without them. God willing my recovery will be swift and I will be back out on the trails in no time. I took my first ice bath just a few minutes ago to aid the process. I will be taking it easy obviously the next few weeks. I am coming home tomorrow so I will see you all Wednesday or Thursday.

Boston Countdown T -36 and counting.....

Monday will be the race of my life so far and the countdown has begun.
I wish I could say that I was at 100% but in the past month my knee has been bothering me more and more. Fortunately the good people at the Sports Medicine Institute that work on the athletes at Stanford have fixed me up and I am feeling better now than I have since the pain began.

I leave tonight after watching my Earthquakes match up against the Galaxy.

I will arrive in Boston early tomorrow and take in as much of the city as I can before pre race dinner and mandatory lights out. I will be back Tuesday at noon.

The race starts at 10am ET which is 7am PT (Your time) on Monday April 20th.

Last weekend for Easter my family and my tri family competed in th Artichoke 10k and Half Marathon. It was great fun.



Also last night we Hallvard, Amy, Florian and I competed in the IM swim meet in the relays. We had a great time.

A Price to Pay



I am 36 now and in the few weeks since I turned 36 I accomplished my first Olympic Triathlon down at UC Santa Barbara. My time unofficially was 3 hours and 9 minutes. For those of you unfamiliar with the distance of an Olympic Triathlon they are as follows. 1500m swim (.92 mile) 40k Bike (24 miles) and 10k run (6 miles). Good to be alive. Good to be alive were the thoughts racing through my head after the race. In the couple of hours I was up before the race and just before I kept thinking I should probably not do this right now. You see since Friday I had been fighting a cold. I felt OK but I knew it was coming. Saturday I had even lost my voice. I also knew that running this event would most likely make me worse which of course it did as I am writing this blog in bed where I have been ever since I got home Sunday night.



The race went well but I took it easy. Of course the swim was my main concern having to swim nearly a mile. The water temp was fine actually but the longest part of the swim had me swimming with the waves coming in from the right side which is where I breathe so it was very disruptive. In the parts where the waves were not bothering me I was fine. I of course made up time in the bike and a lot of time on the run.



As with many athletes my adrenaline and will took over and I managed to will myself through the race and after setting a bench mark of 3hours and 9 minutes I can only improve from there.



As the title suggests - as with everything there is a price to pay and for me it means I am going to be in bed at least another day and I am going to be very busy the next few days catching up.



On March 21st we had the March parties at the ranch. As always it was a blast. I made dinner for everyone and we even went to one of my mom's horse shows.



Last Thursday a few of us went on a leisurely ride to the coast and back up Tunitus Creek. I have to admit the more I do these things the easier it gets. The trip was great. It included a stop at the goat cheese factory, a picnic with some artichoke bread, a little nap at the beach, and even a Margarita for a night cap. The whole ride was 67 miles which I have not done since high school.



Boston is now less than 3 weeks away and hopefully I will feel better enough to resume training tomorrow.

On a Mission!

Last year when I turned 35 I was treated to a very special birthday. This year I was on a mission to beat that or come close. Well lets just say I had a great time trying.

For my actual birthday I had my family over and I we made enchiladas with cupcakes and ice cream.

For my birthday run I took Hallvard to Castle Rock on a nice sunny day. We did just under 10 miles that day. A great run. Speaking of runs this week was a big one starting with Castle Rock, On Saturday I ran the Angel Island 25K. I originally planned to just take it easy but som eone bumped me on the way up and after that it was on.  I ended up in 6th place overall and 4th in my age group.  I guess us 30 somethings have no lives. More importantly I made a breakthrough.  Very early in the race I found myself in mu usual spot between the lead group and the intermediates.  When this guy bumped me I suddenly remembered my coach telling me it is not enough to maintain the Status Quo - YOU HAVE TO IMPROVE.  So with that I turned it on and caught up to the lead group by the end of the race. I also battled the guy that bumped me for most of the race which is something I never do.  I ended up beating him by a minute.

On Sunday I did an 8 miles along the Bay Area Ridge Trail with the Tri Team and on Tuesday Hallvard and I ran 20+ miles along the Castle Rock, Sanborn, Saratoga Gap and Long Ridge. Phew!!!

By doing this I completed the series of runs that knocked me out in December and I feel fine.  I am stronger than ever.  My weight is good.  I am on pace for Boston.

On Sunday after the run about I brought together my family with my new Tri family and about 15 of us went wine tasting with lunch and dessert. 

We went by Hallcrest to pick up some wine and had lunch.  Then we ended up going to Bargetto for dessert and chocalates.

Afterwards we went to downtown Santa Cruz and had pizza and pasta and I even picked up a new hat.

We had a blast!!!

Catching Up!!!!

I know it's has been a while but February was way too short. Over the month I achieved my goal weight and finished my rehab.

For Valentines day Nico and I took Chris to the Cliff House and then we took my grandfather to a crab feed in Galt.

Over February I also made a new family. My Tri-family. They are awesome. The best part is I have all these people I can train with pretty much anytime. Coach Reto is great and really supportive and even has a line of clothes that I really like.

Did I mention I completed my first triathlon. That's right I finished the Stanford Treeathlon in 1 hour and 16 minutes. 15th place in my age group and 80th overall (out of 500+) not too bad.

Needless to say I am feeling really good about myself right now and with Boston around the corner I have a very busy upcoming race schedule including: Angel Island 12k (F2R Club), Dare to be Fit 5k, UCSB Triathlon Championships (Olympic Distance), Boston Marathon, Big Sur Marathon (Relay), Wildflower Triathlon (Olympic Distance), and the Bay to Breakers. Phew!!!!!!!!!!

All that in addition to the Kaiser Half Marathon I did on February 1st with the Tri Team and the Jenny's Light Charity 5k I did on March 1st.

Best to keep busy. No wonder I made weight,

Now to build some muscle.

Tomorrow is my Birthday (36) and Sunday we are going on a wine tasting picnic to Hallcrest and Loma Prieta. I will let you know it goes.

A Super Super Bowl Week

As always Nico's birthday falls on Super Bowl Weekend. This year we went instead of having a party at the house we went to Santa Cruz instead. It was fun! Nico had a great time. Afterward we hit one of my favorite sushi spots and had yogurt for dessert.

For the Superbowl as with most big games Nico and I watched it over at Ceasar's house. He has a big screen TV and is a great host. It was an exciting game and since I had not interest in the outcome I let slide the questionable officiating.

Sunday morning Nico, Candida and I ran the Kaiser Permanente Half Marathon. It was their first. Candida did great and averaged 11m16s miles. Nico ran race support with Candida. It was my first race event with my Stanford Tri Team. We did great and had a really great showing. I ran it in 1 hour 35 minutes. Afterwards we had Brunch at the Beach Chalet. It was a beautiful day so the view was great.

First Open Water Swim and The Marin Headlands

As part of my Triathlon training I knew I would have to conquer my deepest fear. No not that one. I am talking about the fear of trying to swim in very cold water. To be honest that has been holding me back for some time. Well I finally got a wet suit in time for team training on Saturday morning and decided I no longer had an excuse to avoid it. So with a little help from Dominic literally pushing me in I did it and .........

It wasn't so bad. In fact it wasn't bad at all. Of course the suit helps ALOT. Well now I just have to work on my technique. Fortunately one of my coaches was there paddling along side of me to give me pointers.

Afterwards Nico and I went to Santa Cruz and he and I did the Wharf to Wharf and back course. He on his bike and me running. It was cool. It was like the old days when my Cross Country coach used to follow me along on his bike with the horse whip ;).

Today we went on our weekly hike to the Marin Headlands. It was cool. Since I had never been there it was cool to explore someplace new. Even cooler was my sister came with us. I always have a good time with her.

It was actually almost a disaster since I forgot the book and we had no data service where we were so I couldn't look up the map on the Internet. However we ended up doing a 6 mile loop that was to our liking and with some great views of the Bay Area.

For our next hike we will be going to the Black Diamond Mines in the East Bay but not for two weeks. Next week I will be running the Kaiser Permanente half Marathon with my sister and the Tri Team. The plan is to do the race and have brunch afterwards at the Beach Chalet.

Ano Nuevo and I join the Stanford Triathlon Team

This past weekend I went on a 18 mile mountain bike ride along encompassing most of Russian Ridge, all of Skyline Ridge and most of Long Ridge. It was exhausting but great.

Last week I joined the Triathlon team at Stanford. My goal is to do a Triathlon later this year but I may do one sooner because everyone is great and it just inspiring to me. We have a pro coach and I am incorporating their workouts into my own. Also instead of over training I plan to spend that excess energy swimming and biking.

This weekend our weekly hike took us to Ano Nuevo. It was great weather and the elephant seals were out and sunbathing in the warm sun. Afterwards we went to grab some Sushi at my favorite spot in Santa Cruz (Sushi Tortoro). It was a short hike. I wanted to get back to watch the Championship Games at Caesar's.


Monday Nico and I went to Sawyer camp trail and I did 10 miles while Nico followed me on his bike. Another great day for running and some more father son bonding time.

This weekend we our planning to go to the Marin Headlands for our weekly hike. This week will be about 6 miles. I am looking forward to it especially since it looks like a bunch of people will be coming.

60 Hikes within 60 Miles of SF

So this past weekend I went to Angel Island with my son and my sister. The original idea was to run a race there being held by PC Trail Runners but we got off too a late start (A little too much partying the night before). We ended up hiking all day and even having lunch on top of Mt. Livermore (the summit). Angel Island was great. My sister and I had not been there since we were kids. We hiked all over the island. There were many great spectacular views and places to picnic. There is another race there March 14th. We may end up doing that one. Below is a link to pictures I took. The ferry coming home was a little late but it turned out to be perfect timing as we were treated to a sunset behind the Golden Gate Bridge.

The holidays have come and gone. Over the holidays there was not much work and I wanted to stay local so I decided that Nico and I would spend the holidays finishing a goal I had started a long time ago: The Mid Peninsula Regional Open Space Preserves. In accomplishing this goal I want to thank Bay Area Hiker for making it easy by providing easy access to map data and a starting point from which to plan our hikes. I actually bought her book 60 hikes within 60 miles of SF. The plan is to do one a week for the rest of the year.

Finally, my boy Dominic for being a real trooper through 10 straight days of hiking, 55 miles, shared with me the amazing experience and got to see some of the more interesting things along the way.
